What we can learn from, Star Trek.
An Essay by
J. C. Jenkins Jr
Having been born in, 1980 I was around when, Star Trek, The Next Generation came out in 1988. I would watch, TNG every time it came on even though I was only 8 at the time I tried to follow the story plots.
Let’s face it; Star Trek was a tough cookie to crack but I enjoyed watching the show. In 1992 I would start reading, Star Trek which turned into an obsession. As I grew up; the Star Trek Universe would expand and grow with me. There were just so many books coming out to read.
The point of this Essay is about what we can learn from Star Trek and it’s not just the great Utopian Society that exists in the, Star Trek Universe. No; Star Trek gives up writers something to work with when creating our Fantasy Worlds or Universes. There’s just so much History in Star Trek and I only have access to the books published in the mainstream median. I am not talking about the Star Trek Online Universe or all the FanFic that people have written. When I get my Cellphone, I might check them out on Deviant Art’s Jet Freak and see what they have to offer.
There is a lot more history in the, Star Trek Online Universe than there is in the Mainstream Publishing.
Star Trek gives us a guideline of how to create Cultures, History, and Evolution and what conflict that exist between to Kingdoms or in Sci-fi Space Empires. But be careful; building a Sci-fi Universe can get out of hand with all the World Building. I know this for a fact; I have been writing since 2001 and published my first novel in 2017. World Building can get out of hand just look at Star Trek and yes even Star Wars.
Star Trek is a great source of Inspiration and will help you with the creation of your Fantasy Worlds or Universe. Don’t put off reading; reading can help you come to understand what goes into creating the different Races or Species; their Culture, History and Evolution.
As a person who grew up reading Star Trek before moving on to Fantasy and other Genres of Writing. I know what it takes to be a writer. I never learned how to write in school and look at how far I’ve come. I still have much to learn and intend to learn to better my writing.
If I can do all of this with only a 3rd Grade Education; then there is now telling what you can accomplish if you set your mind and heart to writing and creating your Fantasy Worlds or Universe.
Spend as much time as you can reading the different Genres until you find what suits and interests you, and above all else. If you get an idea. Write it down no matter how big or small. This will lead to something profound if you keep working at honing your writing.
And above all else; never give up on Writing nor matter what people say or the criticisms you face. Many people have come before you and face harsh criticisms from people who were just mean or know-it-alls.
I face constant Criticisms from my parents because I don’t write Christian Themed or Children’s Books. I even face some abuse because of what I write because it doesn’t conform to their narrow-minded views of what’s right or what’s wrong.
You don’t have to listen to people who don’t read or know anything about writing. Not everyone will be experts. There are just those who live a miserable life and want to spread that misery on others whenever they can.
Follow your heart and write what suits you and don’t listen to Hippocrates or Fools. They are only there to destroy your Gifts.
Only you can either succeed or fail in life. Don’t let other people destroy what Gifts you have from ignorance.
